First Baptist Church of Monroe began as a mission of the First Baptist Church of Sultan. The mission's committee rented a former Skykomish Tree Farm building next to the Snohomish County Fairgrounds for a weekend revival in January of 1963 and the journey began. Attendance that first night was only six, but by September of 1963 First Baptist Church of Monroe had officially organized as a church, with 17 members and 45 enrolled in Sunday school.
L.N. Hess, a local resident, was excited about the work that was going on and invited a young fishing buddy to come to church with him. That man, Charles Etter, came to church and these two men became leaders in the work from the very beginning.
A plan for the first building was agreed upon by the church in July, 1964. The church purchased two acres of land in the heart of a new development called "Strawberry Lane" for $5,400 at the corner of Valley View and Kingman Road (our present location) now known as 179th Avenue and 149th Street. Construction was completed in October of 1965 at a cost of $15,000 for the 3,600 square foot building.
In 1974 four more classrooms were built, adding another 1,080 square feet to the church. The next phase of construction was accomplished in 1996 when the church remodeled the front entrance, foyer, and added new restrooms.
In February 2000, the new education wing was dedicated adding an additional 5,600 square feet to our facilities. This new addition included 8 classrooms, a new kitchen, and a multi-purpose room for fellowships, classes, and Awana.
Finally in 2009 we underwent the largest of all expansions with the addition of a new multi-use building with over 400 seats and seven new classrooms covering 3468 square feet of space. A new 1026 square foot stage was built along with space for a modern professional kitchen to be complete d soon. Included in this project was the remodel of the main hall, entrance, nursery, new restrooms, two new entries and additional parking.
